My Re-Mediation Project: What makes a Rivalry
-My First Real Attempt at video editing
The final project I had to do for this class was a re-mediation project. Essentially we had to turn what we were writing about for our re - purposing project and transform it into another type of media. This was something that I kept in mind throughout the re-purposing process. I remember that as I was working on my re-purposing project, I kept thinking about how great it would be to put it into a video. Everything about the topic screamed sports documentary. It had all the aspects: a somewhat little known rivalry, people with big personalities that could serve as antagonists to each other, and a key moment that really flipped the patter the rivalry was taking on it's head. So for the initial planning steps of the remediation project, I knew that this documentary was what I wanted to do.
The commercial |
As I went forward with the plan, everything was working out. I wanted to do a commercial the same way that ESPN or the Big Ten Network popularized their upcoming documentaries. This was the first step I made. I made a storyboard that did exactly what I wanted it to do, and when I finished the commercial, everything looked exactly how I wanted it to appear. Although I ended up not following through the exact storyboard for the commercial, it still came out the way I was hoping.

What makes a Rivalry - The Final video
From there, I began planning the actual video. But as I was looking over another story board I created for it, it hit me. I realized that making a true documentary was going to be too complicated. I didn't have the clout to get any of the interviews that I would need in order to really help me tell this story. So I had to improvise. I decided that it would make sense to interview some of the the students around campus to see what I would get, and I would let those interviews determine what I create. This ended up producing a different video than what I had thought about. I asked many students who they thought Michigan's biggest rival was, and almost all of them said Ohio State . This made me wonder if it would be better to simply ask, what makes a rivalry? I wanted to find out what went in to why Michigan fans felt so strongly about one team, and so indifferent about the other. The end result was a documentary style vlog that not only talked about the Michigan -Michigan State rivalry or the Michigan - Ohio State rivalry, but one that actually went in depth on what makes a rivalry in general. Thankfully, after searching all over youtube for clips, hours of editing the same 30 seconds over, and over again, and trying to find the music that fit just about right, I can say that I am very proud of what I created.
